Outdoor Family Photoshoots in and Around Skipton

Beautiful natural Outdoor Family Photoshoots in and Around Skipton

If you’ve ever thought about booking a family photoshoot but then immediately pictured chaos, bribery, and someone refusing to smile…honestly, you’re not alone. That’s exactly why I do things the way I do.

I’m Gemma, from Gemma Suckley Photography, and I photograph families who want natural, relaxed outdoor photos without the pressure. No stiff posing, no awkward smiling at the camera, and definitely no expectation that your kids will suddenly turn into perfectly behaved little models. It’s not natural for young kids to sit still, and these don’t always make the best family photos anyway.

I’m based in Skipton and work outdoors because there’s no limitation on families, instead they can move, chat, play, and actually be themselves. My sessions are easy-going and fun, and they feel more like a family walk than a photoshoot, which is usually when the best photos happen.

Why Outdoor Family Photoshoots Work So Well

Outdoor sessions are ideal if you want photos that feel real. Kids don’t have to sit still, adults don’t have to worry about doing the “right” thing, and everything feels much more relaxed.

Some of the reasons families love outdoor shoots:

  • Kids can move, explore and be curious (big win)

  • There’s no pressure to perform or behave perfectly

  • It feels informal and enjoyable rather than staged

  • Natural light makes everything look softer and more timeless

If your child needs a cuddle, a snack, or a moment to run off some energy, that’s absolutely fine. I work around your family exactly as they are.

Favourite Family Photoshoot Locations in and Around Skipton

One of the first things families often ask me is, “Where should we have our photos taken?” Luckily, Skipton and the surrounding areas have some beautiful outdoor spots that work perfectly for relaxed family sessions.

Here are a few favourites:

Skipton Castle Woods

This is always a popular choice, especially for families with younger children. The paths are easy to walk even when it’s a bit muddy for winter sessions. There’s plenty to explore, and the trees create lovely soft light coverage for summer photoshoots. It works well in every season and never feels too formal.

Embsay Reservoir

If you love open space and countryside views, this is a great option. It’s ideal for families who enjoy a gentle walk and want photos that feel calm and natural. It’s also a good shout if you’d like to bring the dog along.

Aireville Park

Aireville Park is a brilliant option for families looking for a relaxed photoshoot in a familiar, easy-to-access location. With open green space and tree-lined paths (great for blossom season) Bonus - it has a park if the kids get a little bored. Aireville Park works well for shorter sessions, younger children, and families who want natural photos that still feel playful and full of life

Somewhere That Means Something to You

If you already have a place your family loves, a regular walk, somewhere near home, or a spot that feels special; I can absolutely use that. I regularly photograph families across Skipton, the Yorkshire Dales, and surrounding villages, and I’m always happy to travel to your chosen a location.

Sessions at your home

If your home feels like the best place for your family photoshoot, that’s always an option. Some children feel much more confident in their own space, and at home family sessions are particularly suited for newborns and very young babies.

What a Family Session With Me Is Actually Like

This is not a ‘stand here and smile at the camera’ kind of shoot. (Although I do include this kind of photos, but in a more natural sense) I’ll gently guide you so you’re never left feeling awkward, but most of the session is simply about spending time together. Walking, chatting, holding hands, laughing, cuddling…all the good stuff. I keep things relaxed and let moments happen naturally. It’s about having fun and making memories.

Your children don’t need to behave in any particular way. Some kids are full of energy, some are shy, some want to be held the whole time, which is completely okay. Some of the most meaningful photos come from those quiet, in-between moments. I lean into what works for the family and individuals.

What Should We Wear?

Short answer: whatever you like.

You’ve probably seen other family photographer with rules of what to wear to a family photoshoot. Like no bold colours. I say choose clothes you feel comfortable moving in and what fits the session. It is more important to stay warm in woolly hats and gloves in winter then wear something that doesn’t suit the outdoor elements for example. Try to avoid big logos or patterns, but other than that; just be yourselves. (and personally I like bold colours) If you feel comfortable and confident, it will show in your photos far more than any perfectly styled outfit.

I Travel for Outdoor Family Photoshoots

Although I’m based in Skipton, I travel across North & West Yorkshire for outdoor family sessions. If you have a location in mind that isn’t listed here, just let me know and we can chat it through.
